There are 10 levels of study in New Zealand schools and universities. The lowest level is a certificate and the highest is a doctoral degree. Each level is more complex than the one below it. These are the names of our qualifications and their levels:

  • Certificates are levels 1 to 4
  • Diplomas are levels 5 and 6
  • Bachelor's degrees and graduate diplomas are level 7
  • Postgraduate certificates and diplomas, and bachelor's degrees with honours are level 8
  • Master's degrees are level 9
  • Doctoral degrees are level 10.

New Zealand has 8 Universities, 25 Polytechnics and/or Institutes of Technology and about 440 secondary schools.

New Zealand eight national universities offering degree programmes in academic and professional studies. All universities offer a broad range of subjects for degrees in Computing & IT, Engineering, Commerce, Science and the Arts. Most degrees in New Zealand are for 3 years but there are also a number of degrees which take 4 years.

Admission

To be eligible to study in New Zealand as a student your course must meet the New Zealand requirements for international students. Universities prefer applicants with very good academic background and decent scores in IELTS for admission.

IELTS (Academic) score - Overall 5.5 with no band less than 5.0

Postgraduate Degree

IELTS (Academic) score - Overall band score of 6.0

Cost of Education & Duration of programs

The fees at the universities are calculated on per course/paper or per point basis and may vary according to selection.

  • Business courses: Undergraduate and Postgraduate - NZ$14,000 - NZ$19,000 per annum
  • Science Courses: Undergraduate and Postgraduate - NZ$16,000 - NZ$20,000 per annum
  • Engineering Courses: Undergraduate and Postgraduate NZ$15,000 - NZ$20,000 per annum

Duration of programs:

  • Masters 2 Years except for programs,
  • Postgraduate Diploma 1 Year,
  • Graduate Diploma 1 Year,
  • Bachelors - 3 Years/ 4 Years,
  • Diplomas 1 Year /2 Years,

Documentation Required For Student Visa

Acceptable Financial Documents:

  • Education loan sanction letter
  • Bank statements for the past 6 months immediately preceding the date of application.
  • Fixed Deposits.
  • Balance in Public Provident Fund Accounts/Employers Provident Fund Accounts.
  • Post Office Accounts.
  • National Saving Certificates
  • Evidence of source of income and income to be provided for the student's financial guarantors and parents;
  • Documentary evidence in support of every instance of recent deposits should be Provided.

Financial Documents

How much liquid funds are to be shown for visa purpose?

  • If the course duration is < = 12 months then provide documentary evidence of liquid funds for tuition fee for the entire course duration + NZ$ 15000 towards living expenses in New Zealand.
  • If the duration of course is > 12 months then provide documentary evidence of liquid funds for tuition fee for 1st 12 months + NZ$ 15000 towards living expenses in New Zealand + payment plan for the rest of the tuition and living expenses in New Zealand. Payment plan can include evidence of income of the sponsors, access to additional funds via sale of immovable property etc.

Qualification Documents

Certificate of completion along with mark sheets for all academics should be provided which includes:

  • Class 10 (Matriculation)
  • Class 12 (Senior Secondary)
  • Graduation Certificate
  • Post Graduate Certificate
  • Other courses and Diplomas done
  • Certified photocopies of all documents to be provided
  • English translation must be provided in case any of the certificate of completion and / or mark sheets has been issued in the regional language

Evidence of English Language Ability

Proficiency in English language is considered as a positive indicator in assessing a student visa application.

IELTS score of atleast 5.5 or evidence of having met English language entry requirements for the course of study in NZ, which ever is applicable and higher.

Accommodation and living expenses

You require 10-15,000 New Zealand Dollars per annum to support your living in New Zealand.

Applying for a visa

After securing admission into the University one must start with the visa formalities.

Processing Time

  • Majority of positive profile applications are being transferred to other INZ offices.
  • Processing time for positive profile applications is 15 working days.
  • For need to review stream applications, allocation timeframe is 5-7 weeks and processing time is further 8-10 weeks.
  • For applications requiring in-depth verifications the processing time is pushed out further as these take a minimum of 4 weeks to be completed from date of request.

Employment/Work Rights For Students

  • Students undertaking a full-time course of study of at least 2 academic years or undertaking a full-time course of study in New Zealand, culminating in a New Zealand qualification that would qualify for points under the Skilled Migrant Category may work up to 20 hours in any given week during the academic year
  • Students undertaking a course of 12 months or more may work full-time over the summer holidays
  • Students in Years 12 and 13, and eligible English language students may work up to 20 hours in any given week during the academic year
  • International students who have successfully completed a qualification in NZ that would qualify for points under the SMC, may be granted a twelve month open work permit
  • Students with an offer of employment relevant to their New Zealand qualification may apply for a 2 year post-study work permit to obtain practical work experience

Partner of A Student

  • a completed visa application form and fee;
  • Form for partners supporting partnership-based temporary entry applications (NZIS 1146).
  •  Extensive evidence of relationship with the student which may include (marriage certificate, marriage photographs, birth certificates for the children born to the couple, evidence of living together etc.)
  • Police clearance certificate issued by the designated authorities and medical certificates completed from the doctor on our panel; and
  • evidence of NZD 5000 per annum for living expenses
