VISA PROCESS OF US F1 AND DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
The F1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that enables international students to pursue full-time studies in the USA at accredited institutions or language training programs. Here’s an overview of the F1 visa process and required documents:
Admission to a SEVP-Certified Institution:
Before applying for an F1 visa, you must first secure admission to a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified institution in the USA, such as a university, college, or language school.
Complete Form DS-160:
Fill out the online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160) and upload a recent photo that meets specific requirements.
Pay the Visa Application Fee:
Submit the non-refundable visa application fee, which varies based on nationality and visa type.
SEVIS Fee Payment:
Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, required for all F1 applicants, which funds the administration of the SEVP program. You’ll need to provide proof of SEVIS fee payment at your visa interview.
Receive Form I-20:
Once accepted by a SEVP-certified institution, you’ll receive a Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) from the school’s designated official. This form includes details about your program, start date, and estimated expenses.
Schedule and Attend the Visa Interview:
Arrange and attend a visa interview at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in your country. Required documents for the interview include:
- A valid passport (at least six months beyond your intended stay in the USA)
- Form DS-160 confirmation page
- Visa application fee payment receipt
- SEVIS I-901 fee payment receipt
- Form I-20 from your SEVP-certified institution
- Financial documents proving your ability to cover tuition, living expenses, and other costs (e.g., bank statements, scholarship letters, or affidavits of support)
- Academic transcripts, diplomas, or certificates from previous schools attended
- Any additional documents requested by the consular officer, such as standardized test scores, proof of ties to your home country, or letters of recommendation
Visa Decision:
After your interview, the consular officer will decide on your application. If approved, you’ll receive your passport with the F1 visa inside.
It’s crucial to follow the instructions provided by the U.S. embassy or consulate closely and to thoroughly prepare your documents. During the interview, be ready to discuss your academic plans, financial situation, and ties to your home country.
